If they don't understand why, they won't buy

Most business owners can talk about what they do. Fewer can explain why someone should care. And even fewer can do it in plain language that a five-year-old and an eighty-five-year-old would both understand instantly.

That gap between "what I do" and "why it matters to you" is where clients get lost. This worksheet closes that gap by walking you through four steps, in order, so you come out the other side with a clear, complete picture of why people should buy what you're selling.

When you can answer that question with confidence, everything gets easier: your marketing, your conversations, your pricing, and your referrals.

Four steps to total clarity

Each step builds on the last. Complete them in order and you'll have everything you need to communicate your value.

01

Identify Your Target Market

A target market is not everyone who could ever hire you. It's a specific group you can find, who recognizes you're speaking to them, with existing networks you can tap into. This step forces you to get specific enough that your marketing actually lands.

02

Urgent Needs & Compelling Desires

What are your clients desperate to move away from? What are they excited to move toward? These are two very different things. Map both columns and you'll understand what actually drives their decisions, not what you assume drives them.

03

Your Single Big Result

People come to you for one result. State it in language so plain that anyone can grasp it immediately. The most common mistake is overcomplicating this because complexity feels more sophisticated. It doesn't. Simplicity sells.

04

Map the FEPS Benefits

Under your big result sit four layers of benefit: Financial, Emotional, Physical, and Spiritual. When you can articulate all four, you stop selling features and start showing the full depth of value your clients receive. Then test it: does the return obviously outweigh the investment?

Who is this for?

This worksheet is for any service professional or business owner who wants to stop marketing to everyone and start speaking directly to the people who are most likely to hire them.

  • Business owners who struggle to explain what they do in a way that makes people lean in
  • Service professionals who know they're good at what they do but can't articulate why it matters
  • Anyone who has been told "I don't really understand what you do"
  • Business owners whose marketing feels scattered and unfocused
  • Anyone about to rebrand, launch a website, or hire a marketing person and wants to give them clear instructions

"Picture your marketing budget as two hundred hammer blows. You can scatter them across the whole sheet of metal and dent nothing. Or you can pick one spot and hit it two hundred times in a row. That's what happens when you know exactly who you're talking to and why they should listen."

Bonus: Your Marketing Department Brief

The worksheet ends with a one-page summary you can hand to anyone doing your marketing.

🎯

Target market statement

A concise description of exactly who you serve and where to find them, ready to hand off to anyone running your ads, writing your emails, or building your website.

💡

Single big result

Your core promise, stated in language anyone can understand. This becomes the headline of your marketing, the first sentence of your bio, and the answer to "so what do you do?"

🔑

FEPS benefits summary

The four-layer benefits map that gives your marketing person (or you) years of talking points. Every email, social post, and conversation can draw from this well.

🔨

The Hammer Test

A final gut-check: is your marketing budget hitting the same spot over and over, or scattered across the entire sheet of metal? If you can't answer that, go back to Step 1.
